3rd & 4th Mondrian Maps, continued

3rd & 4th has been working hard on our maps, and we are just about finished!

We used primary colored watercolor to select areas of importance to add color to.

Here are several of the finished maps.

Can you identify any of our local Wilmington neighborhoods?

3rd & 4th Grade - Mondrian Maps

3rd and 4th graders will soon begin the classroom unit
Mountains to Sea
as they explore all aspects of North Caroline.

In Art, we are connecting to the study of maps and map making
by using goolge maps to draw maps of Wilmington.

Working in groups, students used the iPads to select either a portion of town, or all of Wilmington to draw.

We also used several printed maps of isolated areas such as Bald Head Island, Wrighstville Beach, or downtown.

Our cartographers are well on their way!
We are also looking at the artist Piet Mondrian, and will soon add color in select areas.

6th Grade - Color Spectrum

What a beautiful area we live in!
The biodiversity of the plants in our native gardens is incredible!

yellow + blue = green
...but what shade of green?

In an attempt to explore the endless possibilities of color mixing, I had 6th graders head outside and collect 3 leaves each. We then lined up all that we collected and were amazed at the spectrum of color. We then discussed ratios and proportions and we began to understand how to recreate so many spectacular colors.

Stay tuned for our leaf inspired artwork that students are currently working on!

1st & 2nd Grade - Welcome, Fall - Tissue Trees

Welcome, Fall!

We are ready to welcome in fall with this mixed media tree project.

We began by observing and sketching the trees found outside our Art room.
We then used oil pastels to color the trunks and branches, adding texture for bark.

The sky was created using a watercolor wash.

Students then colleged cut and turn pieces of tissue paper for the leaves.

Here are a couple of the finished trees, soon to be displayed in the hallway.

Collaborative Community Artwork

At the beginning of the year, many of our classrooms
focus on building a sense of community.

In Art, we expanded on this by creating a
collaborative piece of artwork, representing each child.

3rd - 6th Grade students created collages from magazines, choosing images that represented their individual personalities. We discussed how each person brought something different to a community and how diversity adds strength to a group.

Preschool - 2nd grade used oil pastels and watercolor to create individual pieces of artwork that were then put into a collaborative "Garden of Friends".

I had some much appreciated help hanging the artwork. :)

7th/8th Painting Elective - Watercolor Color Wheels

On the first day of painting class.....

We made color wheels, including tertiary colors, using watercolors.

I allowed some freedom with the "wheel" shape, and some of the solutions were super creative.

A face for every color.

This was a great lead-in to our watercolor projects.
