1st & 2nd - Dot, Dot, Dot!

Many artists have used the shape of a simple dot to create their artwork. So, we thought that we would as well!  We read the book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds (one of my favorites!), which tells the story of a young girl who overcomes her fear of drawing by starting with a simple dot. Once she starts, her dots become more and more complex until she sees herself as an artist.

We then looked at the artwork of several artist who have used dots in their artwork -

Roy Lichtenstein

Georges Seurat

 Aboriginal Art

We then experimented with a variety of art materials by making dots – big dots, little dots, dots inside of dots, and dots surrounded by other dots. Students rotated between 6 stations of different art materials including markers, oil pastels, color pencils, do-a-dots, watercolor crayons, and watercolor paint.

We also talked about the similarities and differences between the materials.

Next, we looked at the artwork of Canadian artist Angie Vandenbogaard - a quick favorite amongst the kids!

Now down to business.....

Each student then started their own monochromatic (one color) tree.. using a color of their couch as a main color, and one secondary color.

Tree trunks were drawn with marker and watercolor. For the tree leaves, students gathered a plate full of their monochromatic materials that they wished to use. They were required to use at least 3 different materials, but most students chose to use a much larger variety! :)

We also made one large group tree using FSW colors, green and blue. (Auction??)

Here are a few that are complete... more to come shortly!
