5th & 6th - Keith Haring Drawings

We had been working so hard on the One Point Perspective project, I wanted to move to something with a looser drawing style... so Keith Haring it was!

(He just so happens to be one of my personal favorites, so I love the chance to share his art)

After looking at some of Haring's art and watching "Drawing the Line", we noticed the motion lines he uses to show movement. We also discussed the thick bold lines Haring uses in his simple, but effective drawings.

Less talking, more drawing! One at a time, students drew each other in interesting poses.
At first there were some belly-aching about pictures "not looking right" but after about 3 drawings, everyone noticed quick improvement.. and so began attempts for more unique poses.
I love how uninhibited our kids are!

Here are some in progress and finished drawings.
Through this process we focused on proportion, composition, line... and FUN!

More Keith Haring inspired artwork to come!!

Cape Fear Environmental Film Forum - Crowdsourcing project

We started this project before the holiday break, and have been keeping it going since.
All grades K - 8 participated in this awesome collaboration!

More info on the Cape Fear Environmental Film Forum (with a video by UNCW Film professor, and our buddy, Andre Silva
Cape Fear Environmental Film Forum

Each student was given a paper with a leaf image. They could draw, paint, color over the entire paper, the only rule was that they had to keep the shape of the leaf as a part of their design.  Andre is going to scan each drawing and sync them into a short film that will be used as a teaser trailer for the film forum.

Here are a few example -

Again, we are so happy to be participating in the CFEFF!!
Art, Film, Nature!! WOOHOO!!!

Martin Luther King Day Preparation.

School in in session on Martin Luther King Day at FSW as we demonstrate our community spirit and our commitment to diversity and inclusion. We have participated in the MLK Day parade for 15 years. We are proud to continue this tradition.

In Art class, all grades are working on a collaborative banner that will be displayed at our MLK celebration. Our theme  is "Martin's Big Words".

Each student in grades K - 8th will write a word, quote, or portion of a speech of Dr King's.
After looking at several examples of illustrated text, students are adding color to their words.

Did I mention this is going to be quite a BIG banner...?

Assembling all of the quotes onto the banner.

We invite all parents, grandparents, alumni and friends to join us for an all-school celebration at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Activity Center (1401 Peachtree Ave), across the street from our Pine Grove Campus from 9am-10am on Monday, January 20th.

Following the program, students and teachers in grades 3-8 will be transported downtown to march and sing in the MLK Day parade.
