Celebrating Day of Peace

How lucky are we that our school recognizes the significance of awareness to creating Peace!

International Day of Peace. 

Sandpiper students celebrated by creating beautiful chalk drawings. 

The timing of this was wonderful, since we have been working on blending oil pastels - students were able to use some of the same knowledge to blend the chalk - I love it when projects are educational and fun!

Osprey - Drawing pencils

Osprey have been exploring the use of different drawing pencils. Students made value scales in their sketchbooks to see how each pencil worked. 

 We discovered how 2H pencils are great for drawing details while 6B are excellent for adding a soft shadow

We will soon put this knowledge to use on a value drawing project.

Kindergarten- Outdoor Drawing

We just couldn't pass up the gorgeous weather today! 

Kindergarten took their sketchbooks and pencils outside to do observation drawings of the gardens around our school. 

3rd & 4th - oil pastel blending

Practicing blending techniques in our sketchbooks. Next we will put these skills to use in a completed piece of artwork. Great job!

Seahorses - Positive & Negative Space

One of the first steps in teaching children to create interesting compositions is to discover how space is broken up through the use of positive and negative space.

. 

1st & 2nd grade looked at how artists use positive and negative space to divide a composition by cutting shapes out of bright colored paper. There were a lot of "ooo"'s and "ahhh"'s as these pieces came together!

Next, we will continue our look at pos. & neg. space by creating more detailed compositions.

Middle School - Singletary Lake Retreat

The annual Rules Process Retreat at Singletary Lake is one of my favorite Friends School traditions! I love watching our Middle School students treat each other with such respect as they listen to each other and work together to create the rules that will be followed throughout the school year.

I wanted to extend this theme of collaboration to the art project created on the trip.This year each student was given 1/4 of a circle and used oil pastels and watercolors to create warm and cool colored designs.

Warm colors were used for the inside of the circles, and cool colors for the outside.

The oil pastels created a "resist" effect when painted over with watercolors.

Thanks to our "sophisticated" 8th graders for doing the layout and hanging the artwork!

Our hallway is so bright and cheery with these hanging up!
