Ice, Ice, Baby....

Our little corner of the world, Wilmington, didn't quite see the volume of ice and snow as most of the country, however we did get a little taste of ice this past week, leading to a snow day Tuesday, and 2 hour delay and modified schedule on Wednesday. 

The ice, while reason for caution on the roads, was beautiful! All pants were incapsulated with a thin layer. So, we strayed from our current lesson a bit and had an impromptu photography lesson. Perfect.

1st & 2nd - Bits & Pieces Found Object Portraits

Try to not smile while looking at these - it might be impossible!

Along with a collection of odds and ends found around the art room, students brought in found objects from home - fabric, beads, bottle caps etc. to create these darling portraits. 

I love seeing everyone's personalities shine through in these!

3rd & 4th - Jim Dine hearts

We checked out artwork fron American artist Jim Dine, noted the blending and abstraction of color, and then made these beauties!

5th Grade - still life drawings

Here is what 5th grade has been up to - 

Still life drawings, focusing on drawing three dimensionally. 

After an initial class of learning drawing techniques while looking at one object, I set up a collection of items and invited students to bring in an item from home to add to our still life - some even wanted to draw their shoes, which was also great! Everyone set around the large table, finding an angle they found most interesting. 

We began in pencil, moved to charcoal ( oh how fun!) and then added color and shading with chalk pastels.

We used a viewfinder technique to isolate the areas of interest - each artist had to include at least 3 items in their picture.

1st & 2nd - Clay Owls At Night

Welcome back! 

Winter break was wonderful, but now we are back in full swing in the Art room! 

Here is a project 1st and 2nd started before break, and completed this week. 

This was certainly a mixed media project - we used clay, crayon, watercolor, tempera paint, oil pastel,   found nature items, and wire for a hanging hook. Whew! Each step came together beautifully! 

Check them out, now hanging in the Pine Grove hallway, these sweet little owls just make me smile!

5th Grade - Chalk Pastel Winter Wonderland!

'Tis the season for fun little winter projects!

5th Grade drew a winder landscape and then traced over their lines with glue. 

Some made snowmen on skies, others a quiet forest. 

When the glue dried, we used chalk pastels, focusing on blending techniques. 

The bright colors contrasted beautifully against the black paper. 

They turned out looking quite mysterious, just like a chilly winter night!

3rd & 4th Grade - Clay Coil Turtles

Several weeks ago 3rd & 4th graders made clay turtles using a coil technique. 

This week we are trying out a new way of coloring clay that I have seen all over the inter webs(thanks Pinterest!

After looking at many pictures of turtles on the iPads and noting their unique shell textures, we wanted to achieve this look on the clay turtles. So, instead of paint or glaze, we used crayons and then a wash of black watercolor. 

Students had to add several layers of crayon in order to fill in as much of the surface as possible. 

Here are a few finished turtles after their dive into the paint bucket!

We were all quite happy with the results, and I think will be experimenting with this some more!
